You Don’t Have to Be a Scholar to Understand God’s Word
The Bible is not reserved for theologians or pastors. It’s God’s love letter to every person, including those just beginning their spiritual journey. If you’re new to reading Scripture, you’re not alone—and you’re right where God wants you to be: hungry to know Him.

But the Bible is also a big book, and without a plan, it can feel overwhelming. Here’s how to begin in a way that is simple, meaningful, and Spirit-led.
Step 1: Start with the Right Heart
Before you even open the Bible, begin with this prayer:
“God, open my eyes to see wonderful things in Your Word. Teach me. Speak to me.”
Reading the Bible is not just gaining knowledge—it’s about building relationship with God (Jeremiah 29:13, James 4:8). The Holy Spirit is your teacher (John 14:26).
Step 2: Begin with the Gospels
If you’re wondering where to start, the best place is Jesus. Start with the Gospel of John:
- It introduces who Jesus is: fully God, fully man.
- It’s clear, powerful, and foundational for understanding salvation.
After John, continue with:
- Mark – Short and action-packed.
- Matthew – Written for a Jewish audience; contains the Sermon on the Mount.
- Luke – Detailed and historical.
These four Gospels will help you see who Jesus is, what He taught, and why He came.
Step 3: Read with a Plan, Not Pressure
Don’t aim to read the entire Bible in one go. Start with a few verses or a chapter a day. Reflect. Ask:
- What does this teach me about God?
- What does it teach me about myself?
- How can I apply this today?
Use a reading plan or devotional guide if needed. The “YouVersion Bible App” offers excellent beginner plans.
Step 4: Use a Readable Translation
Choose a translation that’s faithful to the text but easy to understand:
- New Living Translation (NLT) – Great for beginners.
- New International Version (NIV) – Balanced and clear.
- English Standard Version (ESV) – Accurate but readable.
Step 5: Take Notes and Ask Questions
Write down your thoughts, questions, or verses that stand out. Don’t be afraid to ask others or research answers. God loves a seeking heart (Proverbs 2:3–5).
Step 6: Be Consistent, Not Perfect
You won’t always “feel” something when reading. But over time, the Word will begin to renew your mind and transform your life (Romans 12:2). Keep showing up—God will meet you there.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” – Psalm 119:105
